How to edit your Google Business Profile (and which edits are risky)

Where to edit each field of a Google Business Profile, how long Google takes to review changes, and which edits can trigger re-verification or suspension.

// in this article

To edit your Google Business Profile, sign in to the Google Account that manages it, go to business.google.com (it opens your profile in Google Search), select Edit profile, make the change and select Save. On a phone, open the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right, then Edit profile. Google reviews every edit before it goes live, usually within 10 minutes, but sometimes up to 30 days.

Most edits are routine. A few, such as changing your business name or address, can send the profile back through verification, and one common shortcut, adding keywords to the name, can get it suspended. This guide lists every field you can change, then sorts the edits into safe, slow and risky, using Google’s help pages as checked in October 2026.

Step by step

These are the steps from Google’s edit your Business Profile help page.

On a computer:

  1. Sign in to the Google Account linked to your Business Profile.
  2. Go to business.google.com. It shows your profile in Google Search with the management tools on top.
  3. Select Edit profile.
  4. Change the field you need and select Save.

In the Google Maps app:

  1. Open Google Maps, signed in to the same account.
  2. Tap Business at the bottom right.
  3. Tap Edit profile, make the change and tap Save.

Signing in to the right account is the step that trips most people up. If you see no Edit profile button, you’re signed in to an account that doesn’t manage the profile. Ask whoever set it up to add you as a manager rather than creating a second profile for the same business.

step_02 Open profile business.google.com or Maps, Business tab.
step_03 Edit profile Change one field at a time.

Every field you can edit

Google lists these fields as editable:

  • Business name
  • Categories: one primary category and up to 9 additional ones
  • Address and map pin
  • Service area, for businesses that travel to customers
  • Hours: regular, special (holidays) and “more hours” such as delivery or pickup
  • Phone numbers: a primary number and up to 2 more
  • Chat, through WhatsApp or text, where available
  • Website
  • Social media links, one per platform
  • Attributes, such as “wheelchair accessible entrance” or “women-owned”
  • Photos and videos
  • Business description
  • Opening date
  • Menu or services, and products for eligible retailers, where available
  • Hotel details, for hotels only

For photos, our guide to Google Business Profile photo size covers the file rules and which ones to upload first.

What happens after you save

Google checks every edit before it shows. Its help page on edits gives three statuses:

  • Accepted: the change shows on your profile.
  • Pending: still under review. Your profile stays live with the old details until the review finishes.
  • Not approved: Google couldn’t confirm the change was accurate. You may be able to appeal.

Google can also change your profile itself. If it receives reports that your details are wrong, it may update them, and you’ll get a notification and an alert in the Edit profile section. Check that section every few weeks, because a “helpful” edit from the public can change your hours or category without you noticing.

Safe, slow and risky edits

Not all edits are equal. Here’s how I’d group them, based on what Google’s help pages and business guidelines say.

Edit Risk Why
Hours, special hours Safe Routine, and keeping them right is expected
Description, attributes Safe Low scrutiny
Photos, posts Safe Reviewed, but rarely a problem
Website, phone, social links Safe to slow Check the new number or site works first
Additional categories Slow Can change which searches you show for
Primary category Slow Directly changes how Google matches you to searches
Business name Risky May need re-verification; keywords can get you suspended
Address Risky Moving after verification means verifying again

Business name

Change the name only if the business actually changed its name, and then match it exactly to your signage, website and invoices. Google’s help page warns: “If you change your business name after it’s verified, you might need to verify your business again.”

Never add a city, a service or a slogan to the name. Google’s guidelines say that adding unnecessary information to your business name “could result in the suspension of your Business Profile”. “Smith Plumbing” is fine. “Smith Plumbing Dallas, 24/7 Emergency Plumber” is the fastest way to lose the profile.

Address

If you move, update the address, but expect to verify again. Google says: “If you move your business to a new address after it’s verified, you must verify your business again.” Plan for it: change the address close to the move date, not weeks ahead, and keep the old phone number working until the new address is verified.

A few address rules from the guidelines are worth knowing before you edit:

  • No P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes. The address must be a real place.
  • No virtual offices. Google says a virtual office “isn’t eligible for a Business Profile”.
  • Service-area businesses hide the address. A plumber working from home should remove the street address from public view and set a service area instead.

Categories

Your primary category is the strongest signal of what you do. Google’s guidelines ask you to “use as few categories as possible” and pick the most specific one that fits. Changing the primary category can move you in and out of whole groups of searches, so change it only when the current one is wrong, and watch your profile’s search views for a few weeks after.

Safe Hours, description, attributes, photos. edit any time
Slow Categories, phone, website. edit, then watch
Risky Name and address. plan it first

Edits that get stuck

If an edit sits as pending or keeps getting rejected, work through this list:

  1. Wait the full review time. Google says up to 30 days. Re-editing the same field while it’s pending doesn’t speed it up.
  2. Check the edit matches the real world. Google rejects changes it “can’t confirm”. If your new hours or address don’t match your website, update the website first.
  3. Change one thing at a time. A new name, address and category in one go looks like a different business. Space big edits out.
  4. Contact Business Profile support from the help center if an edit is still stuck after 30 days.

Step 2 is the one that fixes most rejections. Google cross-checks your profile against other sources, so make your website, your listings and your signage say the same thing before you edit the profile. Our top 10 directory listings guide covers keeping those listings consistent.

FAQ

Why can't I edit my Google Business Profile?

Usually you’re signed in to a Google Account that doesn’t manage the profile. Sign in to the right account, or ask the current owner to add you as a manager. Some fields, such as menus and products, are only available to certain business types.

How long do Google Business Profile edits take?

Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes up to 30 days. The old details stay live until the review finishes.

Will editing my Google Business Profile hurt my ranking?

Routine edits like hours, photos and descriptions won’t. Changing your primary category can change which searches you show for, and changing your name or address can send you back through verification.

Can someone else edit my Google Business Profile?

The public can suggest edits, and Google may apply them if it thinks your details are wrong. You’ll get a notification and an alert in the Edit profile section, so check it regularly.

Before your next edit

Keep your hours current, add photos often, and treat the name and address as fixed unless the business really changes. When you do make a big edit, make one at a time and make sure your website already says the same thing.
