Google’s recommended size for every Google Business Profile photo is 720 by 720 pixels, in JPG or PNG, between 10KB and 5MB. The minimum is 250 by 250 pixels. Videos can be up to 30 seconds long, up to 75MB, and should be 720p or higher. Those are the only numbers Google publishes, on its Business Profile photo help page, checked in October 2026.
Search for “Google Business Profile cover photo size” and you’ll find 1024 by 576, 1080 by 608, 1332 by 750 and 2120 by 1192, each stated as the answer. None of them come from Google. This guide separates Google’s rules from the guesses, and gives you one practical size to export for each photo type so you don’t have to think about it again.
Google’s official requirements
This is everything Google states for Business Profile media.
| Media | Format | File size | Resolution | Other rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photos (all types) | JPG or PNG | 10KB to 5MB | Minimum 250 x 250 px, recommended 720 x 720 px | In focus, well lit, no heavy filters |
| Videos | Not specified | Up to 75MB | 720p or higher | Up to 30 seconds |
On quality, Google asks for photos that are in focus and well lit, with “no significant alterations or excessive use of filters”. In its words: “The image should represent reality.”
Two more rules from the same page catch people out:
- Nothing shows until you’re verified. Photos and videos only appear on Google after the Business Profile is verified.
- Every upload is reviewed. Media can sit as Pending, Not approved or Live, and going live can take 24 to 48 hours. If a photo isn’t showing the day you add it, wait two days before re-uploading.
Why cover photo and logo sizes don’t agree
Google’s help page gives no separate size for the logo or the cover photo. Everything you see quoted for those comes from third-party guides measuring how the images happen to display at the time. That’s why the numbers disagree: each guide measured a different screen, on a different day.
What Google does say about the logo and cover is more useful than a pixel size:
- Your logo may not show at all unless the profile has a name, a valid street address, categories, a phone number and opening hours. If your logo is missing, complete those fields before you blame the image.
- Your cover photo may not be the first photo people see. Google says it may show a customer’s photo instead if your cover is low quality or other sources suggest it isn’t the best image of the business.
So the cover photo is a preference you set, not a guarantee. A sharp, well-lit photo of the actual premises does more for it than hitting an exact pixel count.
What size to export each photo
Because Google crops and resizes photos differently on phones, desktop, Search and Maps, the safest approach is one rule: export larger than the 720 pixel recommendation, keep the file under 5MB, and keep the important part in the middle.
These are the sizes I’d use. They’re my suggestion, not Google’s.
- Logo: a square, 1200 x 1200 pixels, PNG. Use the square version of your logo, with padding around it, because Google may crop it to a circle.
- Cover photo: a wide photo, 1408 x 792 pixels (16:9), JPG. Keep the subject in the center so it still works if Google crops it to a square.
- Everyday photos (interior, exterior, team, products, work): 1200 pixels on the long side, JPG. Square or wide both work.
- Photos for posts: wide, 1200 x 900 pixels (4:3), JPG. Google doesn’t publish a post image size, so stay inside the same 10KB to 5MB rule.
- Videos: 1080p, under 30 seconds, under 75MB. Most phones record 1080p by default, which comfortably beats the 720p minimum.
A 1200 pixel JPG exported at around 80% quality is usually 200KB to 600KB, well inside the 5MB limit, and big enough to look sharp on any screen.
Which photos to upload first
Size is the easy part. The photos you choose matter more, because customers use them to decide whether you’re real and whether you’re any good. Work through them in this order:
- Logo and cover photo. Set both before anything else so the profile doesn’t fall back on a random image.
- Exterior. Two or three photos of the outside, from the direction people approach. This is the photo that stops a customer driving past your entrance.
- Interior. What the customer sees when they walk in.
- Your work or products. A finished bathroom, a plate of food, a haircut. For a service-area business with no premises, this is the most important set.
- Team. Real people who do the work, if they’re happy to be photographed.
Step 2 matters more than it looks. For a business people visit, the exterior photo is what someone checks while they’re parked outside, trying to work out which door is yours.
How to upload them
Sign in to the Google Account that manages the profile, then open the profile from Google Search (business.google.com takes you there) or from the Business tab in the Google Maps app. Use the photo option, choose the type (logo, cover or a general photo), and upload. The button names move around as Google updates the tools, but the photo option is always in the profile’s own menu. If you need to change other details at the same time, our guide on how to edit a Google Business Profile covers every field and which edits trigger a review.
Before you upload, check each file:
- JPG or PNG, between 10KB and 5MB.
- At least 720 pixels on the shortest side.
- In focus and not filtered.
- No phone numbers, prices or promotional text written on top. That kind of overlay belongs in a post, not a profile photo.
Keep adding them
A profile with one photo from 2021 looks closed. Add a few new photos every month or two, especially of recent work, and replace any that show an old sign, old staff or an old shopfront. If your photos still look thin next to competitors on the map, our guide on where to start with local SEO covers the rest of the profile work that matters first.
FAQ
What size should a Google Business Profile cover photo be?
Google doesn’t publish a separate cover size, only the general 720 x 720 pixel recommendation. A 16:9 photo around 1408 x 792 pixels, under 5MB, with the subject centered, displays well in both the wide and square crops.
What is the best logo size for Google Business Profile?
Use a square logo of at least 720 x 720 pixels, ideally 1200 x 1200, as a PNG with space around the mark. Google may not show the logo until the profile has a name, address, categories, phone number and hours.
Why won't my photo upload to Google Business Profile?
Check it’s a JPG or PNG between 10KB and 5MB and at least 250 pixels on each side. Google also says a failed upload may be a duplicate of a photo you’ve already added.
How long do Google Business Profile photos take to show?
Uploads are reviewed first and can take 24 to 48 hours to go live, according to Google. They only appear at all once the profile is verified.
The short version
Export every photo at 1200 pixels or more, as a JPG or PNG under 5MB, with the subject in the middle. Set your logo and cover first, then add real photos of the outside, the inside and your work. Fresh, honest photos do more for the profile than any exact pixel size.
